The liver is located in the upper right-hand portion of the abdominal cavity, beneath the diaphragm, and on top of the stomach. The liver is the largest gland in the body. The liver holds about one pint (13%) of the body’s blood supply at any given moment. The liver consists of 2 main lobes. Oxygenated blood flows in from the hepatic artery & Nutrient-rich blood flows in from the hepatic portal vein.

The liver regulates most chemical levels in the blood and excretes a product called bile. This helps carry away waste products from the liver. All the blood leaving the stomach and intestines passes through the liver. The liver processes this blood and breaks down, balances, and creates the nutrients and also metabolizes drugs into forms that are easier to use for the rest of the body or that are nontoxic. More than 500 vital functions have been identified with the liver.

Production of bile, which helps carry away waste and break down fats in the small intestine during digestion
Production of certain proteins for blood plasma
Production of cholesterol and special proteins to help carry fats through the body
Conversion of excess glucose into glycogen for storage (glycogen can later be converted back to glucose for energy) and to balance and make glucose as needed
Regulation of blood levels of amino acids, which form the building blocks of proteins
Processing of haemoglobin for use of its iron content (the liver stores iron)
Conversion of poisonous ammonia to urea (urea is an end product of protein metabolism and is excreted in the urine)
Clearing the blood of drugs and other poisonous substances
Regulating blood clotting
Resisting infections by making immune factors and removing bacteria from the bloodstream
Clearance of bilirubin, also from red blood cells. If there is an accumulation of bilirubin, the skin and eyes turn yellow.

When the liver has broken down harmful substances, its by-products are excreted into the bile or blood. Bile by-products enter the intestine and leave the body in the form of faeces. Blood by-products are filtered out by the kidneys, and leave the body in the form of urine.

Types of Liver Diseases:

Fatty liver – Due to accumulation of triglyceride droplets vacuoles in the tissue cells of the liver. Fatty liver is caused by too much alcohol consumption, drug reaction, weight loss or weight gain and malnutrition or consumption of too much of fats. This ailment is growing very rapidly now a days.
Liver cancer – Liver cancer is a severe liver inflammation, which can cause due to any growth in the liver cells due to growth of malignant tumour.
Liver failure – Mental depression, phobia, alcohol consumption, drug abuse, constant feeling and thoughts of fear and insecurity, smoking cause failure of normal functions of Liver.
Enlarged Liver – Common problem found mostly in children but now also gaining in adults due to too much consumption of sweet foods and chocolates.
Liver Jaundice – Caused due to inflammation of the liver resulting into large amount of secretion of bile.
Liver cysts – Initially formed by small hard flesh pocket of membranous tissue of small size that can contain fluid, air, or other substance. They can cause pain and also block the ducts and passage of bile juice and gall bladder.
Liver Infection – Parasites and viruses can infect the liver, causing inflammation that reduces liver function. The viruses that cause liver damage can be spread through blood or semen, contaminated food or water. It is termed as Hepatitis A, B and C.
Autoimmune Liver Disease – immune system attacks certain parts of your body (autoimmune)
Genetic & Heredity Factors – An abnormal gene inherited from biological parents can also be the cause of Liver Diseases.
Liver Cirrhosis – Cirrhosis is a late stage of scarring (fibrosis) of the liver caused by many forms of liver diseases and conditions mainly due to excessive alcoholism, fatty liver and hepatitis B. Advanced cirrhosis is life-threatening.
