Glaucoma is a disease of the eyes that damages the eye’s optic nerve. The optic nerve is connected to the retina, a layer of light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye, and is made up of several nerve fibres.
Optic nerve sends signals from retina to the brain, where these signals are interpreted as the images we see.
In healthy eyes, a clear fluid called aqueous humor circulates inside the front portion of your eyes. To maintain a constant healthy eye pressure, your eye continually produces a small amount of aqueous humor while an equal amount of this fluid flows out of your eyes.
Due to Glaucoma, the aqueous humor does not flow out of the eyes properly. Fluid pressure in the eyes is build up, and over time causes damage to the optic nerve fibres. It is also termed as Ocular Hypertension.
Glaucoma can cause blindness if it is left untreated. Glaucoma is the second biggest cause of blindness in the world; sometimes it is difficult to diagnose this disease at an early stage.
